Production log 5

What progress did you make since your previous entry?

This week we finished the editing of our idents, we exported and got them uploaded as we finished the production on time. The logo animation which was done on blender, was the most challenging part of the week, and when we finally finished it we then had to re think some of our idents as they didnt flow well. However we did pull together and managed to really create 3 idents that portrayed a clear line of branding and was well linked to suit the brief.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Towards the end of last week and the start of this week we needed to go and re-shoot in withdrawal however we did get permission early which meant that as long as we was quick we could use the room. Aside from that one logistical problem we continued to edit during this final week which meant that there was no big logistical problems.

What technical challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

Technically blender was very challenging to use, and that was a big problem as we needed to create our 3D animated logo. I think this was a common theme that ran throughout the whole class, so we all really came together and helped each other out, with this software. By the end of this production i think that the finished product of the logo came out really well considering we didnt have a lot of knowledge on the software. Of course there was things that we wanted to change but we was still happy with how it turned out in the end.

What targets do you aim to achieve before your next entry?

I think that this production was really educating and intriguing, as there is so much that needs to go in a 10 second video. Whilst people perceive idents as 10 seconds of nothing it is hard to create substance and meaning. I think that our team should be proud of what we created because there was a clear branding that ran throughout our suite. We had the idea to create the extremities and the over dramatised school life, but then brought it back down with our logo and, 'tacky' music which creates the humor for the target audience. Overall i think that we did well on an area that was so different to us, it was a challenging task but i think we did it well and to a good standard.

Production log 4

What progress did you make since your previous entry?

This week was all about editing our idents, we decided that we would all work on the same ident collectively so that we could all contribute and have different ideas for the idents. This week we really tried to get the stop motion ident done and get the 3 D animation ident done, because we knew that the fully animated 2D ident and the logo would take the most time in the post-production stage.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

There was not many logistical problems this week, as we all worked on one mac together editing. However we did find that we would need to re-shoot some of our 3D ident which meant that we would need to go and get permission again to film in Withdrawal. However this was not a problem as we went early and it was free to use quickly.

What technical challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

I think the main technical challenge would come with the 2D animation ident an the logo animation which we would need to make on blender. This became a challenge as we only had a basic understanding of the 3D software blender, but that would be addressed next week, so in terms of this weeks post-production there wasnt many problems as it was all on Final Cut which we have all used many times in the past.

What targets do you aim to achieve before your next entry?

For next week we aim to get the post-prodcution done and be finished with our idents. This week we remained on schedule as we did get a lot of editing done, all we have left to do is the 2D animation and the logo which will take time. However, we are confident that we can stay on schedule and finish on time.

Production log 3

What progress did you make since your previous entry?

This week was all about filming for our idents, We started the production of our idents with the 3D animation which we could get done relatively quickly as we only needed to record 5 shots. We was also able to film our stop motion animation and finish the production of our idents by the end of the week. This meant that we could stay on schedule and allow as much time as possible for our post production and editing as we knew that would take the most time.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

In terms of logistics we did need to use some locations around school that we had to check first to see if they was in use or not. We needed to use the Withdrawal room and we needed to use an examination room, so we needed to make sure we asked before hand a time that we could use the rooms. However we was bale to use them within the days we wanted to film which meant that we did stay on track with the production schedule.

What technical challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

There was not many technical problems that we faced during the production of our idents. We did have to do a few takes on the stop motion animation but as the camera we used had a burst picture setting we could quickly over come the continuity problem.

What targets do you aim to achieve before your next entry?

For the next week it is all about editing and animating, there is a lot to do as we need to edit, animate the 2D ident and animate our 3D logo. We know that the 3D animation will take the longest time as we dont have a lot of experience with the software but thats why we have allowed a lot of time for this stage in the idents production.

Production Log 2

What progress did you make since your previous entry?

This week was all about choosing our suite of idents and our logo. Our group dceided to use a range of ideas spanning across all of our work, we also decided to merge initial ideas together for some idents and our logo. For our chosen logo we mainly decided to go with Jannah's idea which was the TV with something that flickers on the screen. In terms of our suite of idents we chose Jannahs full 2D animation idea, then merged mine and Armans ideas for the 3D animation and the Stop motion. We felt that we had a clear line of branding and theme for our suite and we had a strong idea about where each individual ident and as a whole suite was going.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

At this point of the pre-production there was no logistical challenges, this week was all about communicating clearly and making the decisions about the direction of our suite and logo. Of course the following weeks where we would start to film and edit in the production stage would potentially carry some logistical problems whereas this week was very team orientated.

What technical challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

Again there was no technical problems for this week as we was still in the pre-production stage. Whilst there was some deliberation over how we would use technology and software's for the production stage, at this point there was no problems as such. We decided that we would use Adobe Flash (2D), Blender (3D) & Final cut to edit our idents.

What targets do you aim to achieve before your next entry?

Next week our targets would defiantly be to start and finish the filming that we need for our idents. All of our filming can be done in school, so there will not be many logistical problems but we do think that there will be a  lot of different shots as we need a lot of footage for the stop motion. But by the end of the next week we aim to finish filming and the production and hopefully start the post production for our idents as that will take up a lot of time.

Logo Initaial Ideas

Branding

In terms of branding for this logo i have taken Chadwell's logo and revamped it, intentionally adding this old theme to it, almost makes it more fresh and new as there is a lot of detail within it. I wanted the younger target audience to become engaged with the detail of my logo as opposed to designing a logo that is the more conventional, comic/animated logo.

Typography

For typography i decided to have it as the banner at the bottom, of course it is important for the name of the channel to be clear and bold but i also wanted to really emphasise the logo first and then the space underneath for the name would have a lot of clear space, where it could also stand out. I didnt want to have the typography in any cursive or certain style of text, instead ive gone with a more simple option which i think highlights it well as the logo is busy at the top.

Imagery

I wanted the imagery to be quite different, i wanted it to stand out among others and by styling my logo in an old fashioned way continues to still revamp the original Chadwell Heath logo. I decided that i didnt want to try and finely tailor to our target audience by designing something that not only related to school but also try and make it look as youthful as possible. Instead i decided to allow the detail speak for itself and let it have its own style which would relate back to our audience in standing out and being different.

Limitations of technology

Of course this logo will be harder to create on software then it was to design hand drawn, but i feel that the only really hard and tricky bit would be the ribbons that fly off it. It is not a simple design but if enough time is put into it then it can look like the hand drawn one. In terms of colour it is largely black and white apart from the ribbons that will be solid colours and the knights head which will only be a light shade of grey anyway.

Ident initial ideas

IDENT 1- 2D Animation

My first 2D animation idea starts with a black screen and then a line will go across the screen much like a heart rate monitor line. But only children will appear as the spikes and it will be school children playing and laughing. This means that everything will be an outline and largely the screen will be black. In terms of the audio i will start silent and then have the beep like on the monitors, as the children start to form the beep will fade out and the sounds of laughing and children playing will fade in. Whilst the idea is simple and there is no real shocking start or ending i think the very fact that everyone's TV will be black and will just see these children playing as an outline will engage the audience by itself. Of course as the children are playing and are happy it does relate back to the lunch times of school more for the younger years 7,8 & 9 when in the lower school playground.

IDENT 2- 2D Animation

For my second idea, i took inspiration from the School Of Rock film, my logo will turn into a cartoon animation where the head of the knight will come alive and try to abttle a dragon, it would then cut to various parts of the logo in close ups eg the ribbons, the windmill etc. The audio would consist of that old style classic rock music, or some dance/house music because they are the types of genres that would suit the animation as opposed to grime, or rap etc.

IDENT 3- 3D Animation

For my first idea of a 3D animation ident i would start off with the camera high up in the sky which would track down to see the school pop up. We would then continue to track through the main entrance of the school and through the hall ways where students would be lining up ready to go into class. It would be set during the day, so in terms of lighting it would be natural and bright. For the audio i wanted it to be similar music to the BBC 3 ident with the world, but instead of some of the audio being the cars, I would use the students voices as they are talking and messing around in the corridor.

IDENT 4- 3D Animation

For my second idea for a 3D animation ident i would have a student being sent to withdrawal, they would storm out of class and angrily walk down to withdrawal but when they got to the door they would freeze in shock as the teacher would be our logo supervising withdrawal for that lesson. In terms of audio i would start with the shouting between the teacher and student, but i would then change it o some more silly music to lighten the mood of the ident. For the camera i would start by having some quick cuts between the teacher and student and show the student storming out, but i would hold the camera in a long shot as the student looks through to see the logo.

IDENT 5- Stop Motion Animation

My first idea will consist of a student writing ferociously as they come to the end of their test/essay, then the student will drop their pen in exhaustion. I want the setting to be a typical exam hall but they will be a single person by themselves, the lighting will all be natural and the only props i would need would be a pen ad paper. For the audio i want to start off by having a a clock ticking really loud, but that will fade out as we capture the sweat of the students head and the pen dropping the sounds will be the audio but in a slow motion type style. I aim to have the camera moving very quickly we will start in a long shot and move swiftly to a close up starting from his forehead to the pen dropping to which the log will come in. In terms of branding and purpose it will really appeal to the target audience as everyone has felt like that in the exam hall, when students are struggling to finish. If its relate-able then the audience will be really engaged.

IDENT 6- Stop Motion Animation

For my second stop motion idea i will have someone part of the basketball team score a 3 pointer, they will shoot instantly and then walk out with the lights going off. The player will be by themselves throughout the ident, and the camera will stay in a long shot as the player shoots and walks off, and the last shot will be of an empty hall with the lights gone out. I think this will also appeal to the target audience as most students in secondary school played some sort of sport and everyone can relate to the hard work of training to be apart of the school team.

TV Idents: Oppurtunities, Limitations, and Creative Communications

Opportunities

Creation of Corporate identity

Idents allow for an opportunity for branding or Creation of Corporate Identity. Idents are a cheaper way in which the broadcaster can promote their ethos and values to their audience. An example of this would be the ITV idents, many of them denote an action by normal people, eg riding their bikes, sitting on the bus. All of the actions or camera movements are presented in slow motion, to which the camera is either still or on a slow track. Furthermore, the very fact that the girl sitting at the back of the bus wears the bunny ears at (0:14) compared with the rest of the people on the bus add to this element that ITV dont appeal to just one person but rather everyone. ITV want to connote to their audience how they broadcast to all of the UK, the people in the idents are all of different ages and race etc. But the locations as a whole which is the UK stay a constant. ITV want to brand themselves as appealing to everyone, they don't distinctively have a specific demographic but they are much broader in the whole of the UK. The rest of the idents within the suite perhaps provide a different insight onto the branding of ITV. The ident which denotes the men riding the bikes through London during the night at (0:04) whilst it doesn't brand ITV by iteself, collectively with the other idents they are continuously pushing this theme that they are for the UK and they cater to everyone.

Display of text based information

The display of text is the way in which extra text is added into the ident to add more branding for the channel and connote more about the channel from the extra information. An example o f this     would be Home's ident, which a camera takes us through a home, but at specific points there is extra text added. At (0:04) there is text surrounding an item on the table reading, 'looks great, never used' which is in cursive writing which is very bright almost like a light. The text almost seems like a quote that the person said when they put it on the table, which adds to the audience appeal. If the audience can read this and identify with a similar situation that they might have been in then the ident has engaged the audience and can fully promote the channels ethos and branding.

Branding of content

Branding of content is the opportunity for the broadcaster to promote their new flagship programme. Comedy Central and their new show 'Friends' which was broadcasted mostly on channel 4 would be an example of this, as they payed a ,lot of money and have used a suite of idents to promote the show new to their channel. The ident denotes a simple 2D animation lasting 5 seconds, which portrays this little red box, that uncovers the Friends logo, to which a drop down slide happens where it shows the Comedy Central logo. The ident connotes simply how they have this new leading show for their channel. The fact that it is only 5 seconds long means that they can use it as often as possible, to promote the show as often as possible. Comedy want to get their return on their expenditure for buying the shows rights as quick as possible so any chance they have they can promote it with a simple 5 second animation.

Creation of tone

Creation of tone is the broadcaster connoting a certain atmosphere and tone about the channel and how they want to be perceived as by the audience. An example would be Sky Atlantic, their idents have a particular feel to them which evokes a certain emotion in the audience and ultimately gives the channel a certain intended tone. Their ident denote a street, market food place where the man quickly puts the napkin which had writing on it into his bowl at (0:03)  and starts looking around as the camera moves further away from him at (0:05). The action doesnt tell a story but it does still create questions within the audience. Along with the music which is very subtle and slow, it adds to this unnerving tone to the scene, which then creates a bigger tone for the channel. The channel can now be associated with this mysterious, almost sinister tone which is exactly what they want the audience to think for the programmes that they broadcast. This ident is not the conventional way to evoke anxiety or a sinister tone, but it does create the more subtle, spooky atmosphere.

Appeal to target audience

Appealing to the target audience within an ident is perhaps a crucial opportunity for the broadcaster as if they can do this then they can really improve their viewing figures as the audience can relate on a more personal level. An example of this would be the channel Home and their ident, which denotes a slow tracking shot that either moves closer to the subject or revolves around it, but the subject is always a still image. At (0:08) which denotes the books piled on top of each other, as the camera then pans left and out to give an overview of the whole front room. The camera language really highlights the action as it tries to allow the audience to see it as their own. The home is not perfect and the books almost show some clutter which is something that everyone's home has, this again emphasises the audience identification with the ident. Also the logo Home which is denoted in a bright, cursive writing, this also adds to the themes of appealing to their target audience as it acts as a light almost and is not too bright and loud, but it is rather more elegant which is in keeping with the ident.

Encouragement of brand loyalty

Encouragement for the audience is the way in which the ident is used to keep the audience to stay for the night or a particular period of time. This can be seen in the ITV ident 'Super Saturday' this aims to keep the audience watching the channel for the entire Saturday. The ident denotes a 3D animation as the the camera follows the various letters, which all have different shows on them such as Britain's got talent at (0:05.) The fast pace screen tempo aims to keep the audience hooked and to encourage them to want to stay because these popular entertainment based programmes are being shown. The music also provides the upbeat tempo for the ident which again adds to this theme that ITV have the best content on a Saturday and thats why the audience should stay.

Limitations

Typography

Typography is the chance for the broadcaster to really put emphasis on their logo and name, unfortunately some of the meaning in the typography is either too subtle for the audience to understand or it simply doesnt connote enough about the channel its self. SYFY's ident denotes a simple 3D animation where at (0:01)  the camera is in a close up of these purple bubbles to which we then cut in to a birds eye view which reveals the logo. The logo denotes white, 3D animated typography, with standard sizing letters upon a white background. The lack of colour in the typography and the fact that there is no action within the logo means that the audience cant derive any information from it. The lack of colour means that there is no excitement for the audience and instead of connoting the channels ethos it rather just acts as a filler of blank space, that means nothing to the audience.

Resolution

Resolution is the quality of the picture on screen, its the difference between standard definition and high definition, it is the number of pixels that make up the picture. But in STV's case their idents are only in 720p which whilst that's better then standard definition its still not the best resolution to render or exhibit idents in. At (0:09) wee see the real life actions transition into the 2D animation of the logo. Here we can really see the quality of the resolution which becomes a downfall for the channel, as the audience don't want to watch something that isn't the best quality, most younger people can now see the difference relatively well. The channel also is only small and whilst it might not have the finances that ITV have to produce the best idents, in truth that's there own weakness because if they cant produce better quality idents then no one will watch them and they wont make any money.

Colour

Colour is something that creates a lot of meaning, it makes an ident look more appealing and engaging for the audience. As we can see from the BBC idents when there was only black and white which denote their logo and then a transition of a fade into a picture of the UK which lies underneath the logo. The ident is dull and boring, it does connote that they are an English broadcaster and that they want to appeal to everyone with the circle in their logo. However aside from that the ident is not eye catching and has less of an effect in comparison with the idents that BBC have now. At (0:14)

Size

The size of the ident is very important, there are many different size TV's and viewing platforms which means that if the size is not right then it will not disproportionate on some screens. An example would be the BBC 3 ident where the 3D animation is very busy. It contains many actions happening across the whole of the screen which at (0:04) denote people walking down the stairs, right in the top right hand side of the screen. Depending on the TV size and the ratios/resolutions these types of details are lost in the ident. Whilst specifically they dont carry a whole connotation by themselves, they do add to the overall idea of the ident, and when they are lost that would mean that the ident is almost broken and doesnt carry the full connotation it intended on.

Aspect-ratio

The aspect ratio is the height and width of the screen and the size of the image that it produces. Aspect ratios can vary and whilst there is a standardized ratio 4:3 for TV there are still problems when the ratio changes on different viewing platforms which would loose some of the ident. An example of this would be Sky Arts as at (0:10) we see the butterflies fly off from the women, up and away. The ident is supposed to look really exciting as there is a lot of detail, but when the ratio changes some of that detail will be lost. Now the ident doesnt connote what Sky Arts want to be represented as, it will seem more jaded and rough as opposed to this beautiful and 'perfect' ident.

Analogue and digital recording and transmission systems

The difference between analogue and digital is the quality of the picture and the clarity, analogue has a very limited quality and stretched pixels which lowers resolution. Whereas, digital provides a better quality image in a high resolution. In terms of idents it means that the BBC 3 ident for example would be hugely affected depending on what transmission it is broadcasted in. At (0:08) as the camera tracks out the picture denotes more of the background where the man bungee jumps off the cloud. As this is broadcasted in digital then the audience can see these little details that actually carry connotations to make up the whole ident. However if the ident was broadcasted in analogue then most of this background would be cut off and the ident would loose meaning. This would weaken the effect that idents have and then the channel couldn't fully portray its ethos and branding.

Creative Communications

Enhancing ideas

Enhancing ideas within an ident is a broader range of technical elements that can help illustrate the broadcasters ethos' and how they want to be represented. An example of this would be Dave their suite of idents denote an everyday situation but with a surprise ending to them. This ident denotes security checks happening, but one of the trays coming through the machine has a cat sitting in it at (0:05). The channel are trying to connote that they bring the fun and enjoyment to the audience when life is really dull and boring. The camera is in a slow tracking shot at (0:04), which doesnt build to a big reveal because we are not expecting anything, but rather Dave are trying to connote that they bring the unexpected fun. If you want just sit back and watch some entertaining TV then they are the channel for that.

Pushing the technology

Technology is constantly evolving and improving, broadcasters are now able to use special effects for their idents to perfectly frame the shot or do the impossible. There perhaps is a fine line to pushing the technology of course the audience want to see the best and the newest technology involved in the channels content, equally though if the technology is used wrongly or the employees arent very skilled in it then the ident will look bad. An example of this would be the BBC idents, which denote the dogs jumping through a ring of fire at (0:01), as well as running around in a circle at (0:05.) Whilst looking at the dogs running around from a bird eye view, this allows for the shot to be perfectly framed. However, you can still see that it is an animated picture from the action of the dogs, which then could be argued that some of the special effects is a downfall.

Communicating visual ideas to a non-visual audience

This can be achieved through the use of music and voice overs to again portray the ethos and branding of the channel. Sky sports would be a good example of this as at (0:08) we hear a very deep, loud voice over denoting, 'your watching sky sports 1 your home of football' coupled with the audio that plays which is partly of the crowd celebrating and partly the music at (0:06) which carries a more magical tone with it. Sky Sports have been able to apply the use of audio to really emphasise this tone and atmosphere that is created within the ident. The feeling that the channel allows its audience to fully immerse itself in to the sport and really escape and feel like the audience are really at the match.

Creating under pressure of time and budget

This is where we can see that the designer was pressured to create something with very little budget, which acts as a limitation for the broadcaster as the audience wont be engaged with the ident. An example of this would be Movies4Men which denotes a simple D animation of the logo with the camera just sweeping round to the left hand side at (0:06.) The colours are bland, and there is a lack of movement within the ident, which means that it doesnt really connote anything about the channel. It aesthetically looks terrible and the audience will not be engaged with it, meaning that the ident is useless as it doesnt connote anything about their ethos or branding.

Appealing to a target audience

Appealing to a target audience can be achieved through the technical elements within an ident, this would allow the audience to become engaged which ultimately means the broadcaster can get across their ethos and branding better. Good Food's idents would be a good example of how to appeal to a target audience, their ident denotes a group of people all sitting, having desert, and laughing. At (0:05) we see many of the characters laughing and smiling which is captured through some fast paced editing as the the camera continuously cuts between the expressions of the people and the food itself. The ident has been able to appeal to several target audiences, the main demographic which are the everyday people that are interested in cooking and the people that perhaps are more serious about cooking. The ident allows the audience to identify with the characters which means that the audience will pay more attention and Good Food can really illustrate their ethos of food but also this sense of togetherness.

Appreciation of desired tone.

For an ident to really engage the audience which in turn portrays its branding and representation of the channel it needs to carry the right tone. Sky arts ident is a good example of setting the right tone, their ident denotes the butterflies that come from the women as we follow them up to reveal the sky arts logo. At (0:13) we see the a close up in slow motion of just a couple butterflies which are blue and red in very clear detail, as the camera then cuts out to more of a long shot. The ident is really able to illustrate this calming, relaxing tone and the audience can really appreciate the creativity in the visual style. Sky arts therefore are able to brand themselves as this channel fully devoted to the art, and the true beauty that it can possess. The ident is engaging which allows for the branding to clearly come across in the ident, the technical elements of this ident from the special effects to the clarity of the resolution of the ident, means that the audience will pay attention.

Pre-Production Log 1

What progress did you make since your previous entry?

This is my first log and first week starting the project of producing the idents. This week was all about gathering some ideas for different logo designs, and also we needed to design 2 suites of idents, 3 in each. we would need to storyboard the ideas and the following week our group would come together and decide what ideas we want to go with.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

There was no logistical challenges, this week was very individual as we all had to get some separate ideas for the idents and the logo. In the future i think that the problem comes with the production of the 3D ident, as not everyone has access to software, so communication in the group will be very key.

What technical challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

There was no technical challenges this week, we all had to go away and draw/ plan out our ideas, there was no software required for this pre-production stage, which meant that everyone could get on brainstorming and gathering ideas ready to feedback the following week. Technically there was no difficulties as it was all drawing based, so everyone was able to contribute ideas to the group.

What targets do you aim to achieve before your next entry?

As a group we hope to have already decided on what ideas we want to go with, and also we ideally would want to be starting the production of our ideant. Hopefully by the next entry everyone knows their job and what we need to produce either separately or together by the end of next week.

Ident Purposes.

Identity

Idents main purpose is to portray the channels ethos in a very small video, and small space of time. In this case, E4 use a character that represents E4's target audience and put him in certain situations that are relate-able to everyday life, but they have a unique twist to them. The idents always denote something a little bit different, for example the name of the cafe and what they sell, or the actions/features that the people portray on the caravan site (the old man spray painting at .) The music also denotes a more 'cheesy' theme as it is either typical dance music in the caravan ident which is associated with younger people. E4 try to connote to the audience how they are not for everyone. They dont want to be identified with everyone, but rather they have specific audience, which is the younger adults/ older teenagers. They want to be publicised as a unique channel that doesn't cater for everyone. It seems that the everyday situations such as the bus stop ident, is not the main focus, but rather it is the types of people and the actions that they are ding, eg the man running at the end at (0:26) or the older couple at (0:10)

Branding

Through an ident we are able to see the branding of a channel this can be achieved through the style and the themes that the ident creates and wants to portray about the channel. For Eden they seem focused on all the different locations that are almost surreal. Its almost that feeling that they can exhibit the impossible and the ends of the earth. Within each ident the person is always in amazement by their surroundings and the locations that they find themselves in at (0:05), we also see visually in the editing that the colours are the same following what location they are in, eg the forest being green, the desert being orange and yellow. Edens idents denote a constant use of these big blocks where the people may walk on which just places them on a higher level and almost makes it seem like the location is so vast and extrodinary, at (0:12). It seems that the idents are trying to connote that they can go to these unthinkable places and exhibit the most amazing things in terms of nature. The idents aim to brand the channel as this exciting, adventurous channel that goes to all these exotic places.

Marketing

Marketing is the use of an ident to be more specific to one larger event to give it my publicity that it is being exhibited on their channel. ITV used a suite of idents to show that they are broadcasting the 2015 Rugby World Cup. ITV's idents denote children playing rugby for the Grassroots clubs, as they either train or play a match. The video is in slow motion at (0:01) which adds emphasis to the action of playing rugby this is coupled with ITV's logo almost blending in with the action at (0:04). This aims to connote how the channel wants to allow the audience to feel immeresed in the sport, and to also be able to watch it with the whole family, which is represented through the children playing in the ident. ITV would have had to pay a lot of money to broadcast the World Cup and they have created a whole suite of idents to really promote the event. ITV want to connote that they are this exciting, fresh channel that only broadcast the best programmes they also want to connote that they are one of the biggest broadcasters in the UK by covering such a big event.

Packaging

Packaging is the idea that idents can be different but maintain the same themes, and visual style that within a whole suite. The BBC's idents would represent the idea of packaging well, as they all denote different locations and actions yet they all carry a similar style and have some of the same things, to portray the channels ethos. The BBC's idents take place in many different locations eg, park, velodrome, a football pitch, but they all carry the same symbol of the circle at (0:04) to create a representation in all of the idents. Through the ident where the dogs are at the park the audience are introduced to the action very fast in a close up at (0:01) then the ident cuts to a birds eye view shot to illustrate the circle. The BBC want to connote within this suite of idents their ethos, of unity and bringing everyone around the world together. They want to show the audience that they are all about, 'the people' and everything they do is for the audience as opposed to just making money.

Re-packaging

The use of idents can be re-packaged which means that the suites of idents change over time to change and re-brand the channel and their new set of ethos'. The broadcaster is able to change the idents which works as a cheaper method of promoting their new brand. An example of this would be ITV and their idents from 2004 to 2010. The 2004 idents denote a simple 3D animation to reveal their logo, at (0:04.) The idents lack any camera language or editing techniques apart from the animation itself, which lacks the excitment and size of the channel in comparison with the 2010 idents. The 2004 ident connotes more of a serious theme, and almost more business like which in comparison with the new suite of idents (2010) which now denote real acting with animation and their logo. The ident now denotes a slow motion effect along with a tracking shot following the bubbles at (0:07) this not only now represents a lot more about the broadcaster, but also they can brand themselves in a much different way. The ident now connotes how the channel is more entertainment and family based, as the ident now brings excitement and engagement from the audience. We can see the re-pachklaging and re-branding that ITV have done, where in 2004 they wanted to portray themselves as a more serious channel and now in 2010 they have branded themselves as connecting more with their audience and being closer to them.

Scheduling

Idents also carry an element of scheduling for their main, flagship TV programme. They may have spent a lot of money on a popular TV show and they want to promote that as much as possible to get a return on the money. An example would be Comedy Central and their 'Friends' ident, they payed a lot of money to broadcast the show as it was largely on channel 4 beforehand. The whole ident denotes 'Friends,' as the little box slides across to uncover the Friends logo at (0:02), then the drop down to show the Comedy Central logo at (0:04). They want to promote their new show as much as possible and an ident so simple really emphasises their new leading show just because of the screen time that they give to just showing a still image of the friends logo.

Segmentation within Scheduling

Segmentation within the scheduling is largely used by the broadcaster to warn the audience of the watershed, or any content that the audience might find offensive. An example would be Golds 'After Dark' idents. The suite of idents denote a simple animation that means nothing, but the voice-over combined with the visual presentation of the after dark watershed warning really just tells the audience that there may be offensive content being broadcasted now at (0:02). The idents are only 5 seconds long which allows the channel to present a clear warning in the quickest way possible. They dont necessarily connote anything about the channel, but the simple animation allows them to notify the audience with little disruption or meaning to the content.
